Lastly we will hear from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching regarding their work with Improvement Science to address the long-term improvement needs within education. The improvement research content is a possible structure to thoughtfully assess growth and change around these complex ideas. Representing the Carnegie Foundation’s work with Improvement Research are Anna Kawar, Associate for Improvement Science, and Rachel Beattie, Director of Productive Persistence.

First we will hear about Big Picture Learning which is a network of schools that focus on catalyzing vital changes in K-Adult education by generating and sustaining personalized learning environments that work in tandem with the real world of their greater community. From Big Picture Learning we will hear from Elliot Washor, Co-Founder & Director of Big Picture Learning Design Work, and Carlos Moreno, Co-Executive Director.

We will also hear from Gia Truong, the CEO of Envision schools in San Francisco. Envision schools is a highly successful project-based learning school system that is aimed at transforming the lives of students, especially those who are first in their family to go to college. Ms. Truong now oversees all operations including 120 employees and 4 senior management staff at Envision.

We will hear from Eduardo Briceño, who’s article “Mindsets and Student Agency” led our first week’s reading cycle. Briceño is the co-founder and CEO of “Mindset Works”. Briceño founded the Mindset Works with Carol Dweck, Lisa Blackwell, and others in order to enable a world in which people seek and are fulfilled by ongoing learning and growth.

In this week’s podcast we sat down with Dr. Camille Farrington, a research associate at the University of Chicago. Dr. Farrington is the lead author of “Teaching Adolescents to Become Learners: The Role of Noncognitive Factors in Shaping School Performance” a comprehensive research review that illustrates how non cognitive factors interact with school and classroom contexts to affect students’ academic achievement. Dr. Farrington is also the principal researcher on multiple studies as well as the author of the 2014 book: “Failing At School: Lessons For Redesigning Urban High Schools”.
